Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 11:57 pm H@x0r3d
I had my GMail account hacked. By using the hacked GMail account, the jerk accessed my PayPal and eBay accounts. Thus, I come back from vacation to find a $3850 auction on eBay I had to deal with. I dealt with the entire mess, and the end result is no harm done. Not really sure how I got compromised, but you better believe I'm gonna start cracking down on security.

What's driving me crazy is that I can't figure out how it got hacked in the first place. My best guess currently is that another website using the same password got hacked, and then the hacker followed my e-mail address back to GMail, and then proceeded from there. I use SSL for all of my connections. I connect only with HTTPS. My password was fairly lengthy. It's very frustrating being an IT guy, who wants a future in the IT business, and being hit by something like this.

Nov. 7th, 2009 @ 10:27 pm The Most Overdue Livejournal Entry Yet
It's been months since my last posting. The longer I delay this entry, the longer the entry gets, and the easier it is to delay it even further. However, circumstances have presented an opportunity to do so, so here we go! I'm up for the challenge.

To be fair, I'm cheating a bit. I'm using my Facebook status updates to help me remember events that have happened in the past few months. Yes, it's far easier to write a 1-line Facebook update than it is paragraphs of updates in LiveJournal. Perhaps this is why many of my LJ friends have stopped updating their Livejounals. However, I still enjoy the more thorough updates that LJ provides over Facebook, so I'll be stubbornly sticking to it.

Let's see...how about starting of with new places for awesome eats? A couple of months ago, a yogurt shop called Spun opened up across the street from our house. It's convenient, well priced, and extremely tasty. I'm very pleased with this. They offer 2 flavors of yogurt - 1 is plain, and the other is whatever their flavor of the day happens to be. It'd be nice to see the flavor of the day posted on their website.

At MIT, I've recently found out about the Clover food truck. The food is all vegetarian, and amazing. I've been making a daily trek across the campus to eat there during my lunch breaks. I really can't do the place justice in a posting. Everything they serve is priced well and amazingly tasty. Check out their website if you find yourself curious, and stop by the Kendall / MIT redline stop during lunch if you find yourself in the area.

In September, I attempted to see a preview of Michael Moore's new film in Harvard Square. I stood outside in the cold and waited for hours, but didn't make the cut. I would have made it, but there was a problem with line skipping. It was the first night that it got cold enough that I decided to break out my winter wardrobe.

My ER6 earbuds finally bit the dust. I got myself a paid of Skullycandy TIs to replace them with. I wanted headphones instead of earbuds this time around, but I can't really use the headphones on the train due to noise issues. So it's either get another set of noise-isolating earbuds, or a really expensive set of noise-canceling headphones. I haven't decided which way I'm going to go yet.

Windows 7 came out October 22nd. It's a pretty awesome OS. You should switch to it if your hardware can support it. If its a really old computer, do a driver check first. You can get cheap $30 copies from Microsoft if you have a .edu address.

I had a visit to West Virginia near the end of October. I did the usually multi-day gaming session with my gaming group back in WV. The games of choice were Demigod, Dawn of War II Last Stand, and Left 4 Dead. My sister had a baby in the middle of the week. I guess that makes me an Uncle. I got to play DDR Supernova at Park Place Cinema. My friend Colin had a wedding in Fayetteville, WV while I was back. I was a groomsman for this wedding, and some of the highlights include going to a redneck bar the night before, and a very tasty reception.

As of November 6th, this will make my third year of working tech support at MIT. I really wanted out of the job on my second year, and I'm pretty torn up inside about being here for the third year. I feel like my career life has been crippled by the recession. All the opportunities that I had for the taking have been shutdown by MITs job freeze. I've been looking for other opportunities, but nothing has worked out. It really hurts watching my friends who have good pay jobs that are more important than my little tech support gig. I want a job upgrade so badly at this point.

I had an interview with Tufts University that went well enough that I was asked back for the 2nd interview. However, during the 2nd interview, I was not only offered less money than I was told before over the phone, but the co-workers told me horrors stories about how dysfunctional the department I'd be working in would be, and made what I thought was an appealing job look like a job I'd run away from. The last thing I want is to go from a situation I'm unhappy in, to an even worst situation. I guess I should be careful job hunting in this recession.

Right now, I'm currently in Philadelphia attending another friend's wedding. I was given late notice on this wedding, so I had to take the Boltbus down. I do, however, have a plane ticket back to Boston on Monday evening. So at least that portion of the trip won't take forever. Boltbus wasn't terrible, either. the seating was nice, and it's fairly awesome to have an Internet signal as you travel. I wouldn't take it over a cheap plane ticket, but its not a bad way to travel.

I don't know what I'll be doing until Monday evening. The friend I'm with is obviously going to ditch me at every turn because he's trying to get close to a female he's interested in, and thus wants alone time. He's a long time friend whom I care about a lot, but I'm afraid as the years have gone by, we seem to have less and less in common. You just can't go back, I guess. We're both different people now. I like hanging out with him enough, but soon he'll have a girl, and then he'll get married, and then he'll have kids. I might date someone sooner or later, but right now my career problems are top on my mind. I never see myself married or having kids.

Sorry for the spam everyone! :) Read if you give a crap. I'll be updating this massive update with links for people to click on later. ( If anybody cares. ) I'm not using my standard LJ editor, and it's a pain to do with my current editor.

Sep. 12th, 2009 @ 01:38 am Claymore series good. Claymore faked ending BAD D:
So I just finished watching the Claymore anime tonight. I stayed up way too late to do so.

Great series, but *please* remember that ending of the anime is not the real end of the series, and that somewhere near the last 3 or 4 episodes they start making shit up. Wow, it's just terrible stuff too.

Thank goodness the manga is actually still really interesting. Crappy anime ending...

Aug. 15th, 2009 @ 09:26 pm Things calming down a bit...
Not the weekend I planned, but things are at least calming down a bit. Got the laptop back to the professor. It was a stupid BIOS setting that was causing me all that grief. Found out his HDD was dying while I was panicing, though. So at least we found out something from my meltdown.

Ran most of the wired internet cables today. Only room left to do is [info]fearandloafing's room, and he won't be back for two weeks, so we have time to take care of that. Going to take a load of clothes in for donations soon. Hopefully I'll get Sunday to myself. It's not a full weekend, but at least its a day...

One weekend, I'll actually get the entire weekend to myself. One of these days...

Aug. 14th, 2009 @ 07:07 pm It goes...poorly
Not really much to report.

I saw Harry Potter 6 at Jordan's Furniture in Reading a couple of weekends ago. It was the first movie I've ever seen in IMAX, and the first 10 or so minutes of the film were in 3D. IMAX 3D seems to actually work, as opposed to those cursed red / blue 3D glasses from my parent's era. The entire experience at Jordan's is quite interesting. They have a full-sized Fuddrucker's built in, and a massive IMAX movie theater as well. Oh yeah, did I mention this is a 'furniture store'? Very weird.

[info]guilwolfie moved in two weeks ago, and he already has a job at Shaws in Central Square. He'll mainly be working for the seafood department there. He seems to have settled into the Boston area fairly well at this point.

Playing with the PCs in my house a little. Switched the mediaI've been upgrading a lot of my home PC hardware lately. I'm about to switch over the media PC to a 4TB RAID5 array. I also came across a 150GB Raptor that I'll be using in my new Phenom II rig as soon as I finish running tests to assure its reliable.

My boss is out on vacation till September. I've been fairly busy at work.

---Begin crappy day here ---

So the above is the summary I had written up before my day went horribly, horribly wrong. Looked like an awesome weekend I had ahead, right? Yeah, would have been awesome....

Crappy thing #1 - So a professor here has had a problem with his graphics on his Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop. My boss had installed Windows XP on it, and got the computer mostly working before he left on vacation. He asked me to keep working on the graphics to see if I could get it fully functional. So the professor dropped the laptop off to me and had me work on it some today.

As usual, none of the official NVidia drivers were installing. This is because this laptop is meant for Vista, and has no XP support from Dell. This laptop also has hybrid graphics, which are a big massive pain-in-the-rear. To make matters worst, it's impossible to disable the hybrid graphics. In an effort to try to get the graphics to work, I decided that I'd update the BIOS since it was a bit old. I go to Dells site, find the BIOS, and update it successfully.

Then all Hell broke loose. The laptop crashed booting into XP. It crashed booting into XP Safe Mode. It crashed booting into a clean XP installation disc. The laptop, now quite simply, hates XP and will not load it. The Vista installation disc ran fine. The BIOS flashed fine, as far as Dell is concerned. Cause you see, it's *my* problem because the laptop is running XP. Furthermore, I get the blame for the laptop not booting because it was functioning before he gave it to me. Even though all I did was properly update the laptops BIOS.

I apologized to the professor, and now I have to work on this laptop nonstop until I fix it. My weekend plans have completely been hosed. But wait, it gets worst!

Crappy thing #2 - Roommate drama. One of my many roommates has arrived home after about a month away on business travel. He apparently got extremely pissed and angry about the state of the bathroom upstairs. First off, the bathroom was a wreck when he got there. Secondly, the cat box and food had been temporarily moved up into that bathroom. So not only was it a mess, but it stank like catshit.

So this roommate proceeded to act out - slamming doors and stuff. I wasn't home, so I'm not sure how bad it was. All I know is that both lower-floor roommates left the house at some point. Since I'm always in the position of the moderator, it's once again up to *me* to fix this problem. More BS work I have to do when I get home, when I'm already stressed out about the laptop.

I already told another roommate that the cat had to go. However, that roommate has been pushing the leaving date for the cat farther and farther back. So now I'm forced to threaten to toss the cat out on the street if the cat isn't gone by x amount of time, which is not a position I like being put into.

So that's the beginning of my weekend. My time to try to calm down from the work week is gonna apparently be worst than the work week itself. Lovely.

Jul. 23rd, 2009 @ 12:02 pm New PC, New OS
As you all may already be aware, [info]guilwolfie is moving into our place on July 31st. I told him not to bother bringing his computer, because it's fairly old and outdated. It's a single core 3Ghz Sempron with 2GBs of RAM. It's also maxed out on RAM. By no means an unusable computer, but not up to par by my current standards. So I *generously* decided to let him use my current computer, and instead built myself a new computer.

So ok...I used this as an excuse to build myself a new computer. After all, my old computer was still doing everything I needed it to do. I had no real good reason to justify the upgrade. Anyhow, about my new PC -

* Phenom II 955 BE
* ASUS M4A78-E Mobo
* Sonata III case with 500W PSU
* 8GBs DDR2
* 8800 GT 512MB
* 300GB HDD
* SB X-Fi

The processor is a little crazy. Since I really don't have time for gaming these days, it's just always waiting to chew through anything I run. I have a CPU gadget on the side of my screen monitoring all 4 cores on it. It's way overkill for what I do, but I wanted 4 cores and 8GBs of RAM so I would have no problem running multiple virtual machines for my lab simulations. That "sorta" justifies most of it. Kinda. Not really. Oh well, I bought it, built it, and I'm happy with it.

I currently have the RC of Windows 7 64-bit installed. I'm going to upgrade to the full deal when it's released in October. I'd like to give my impressions from actually switching my main desktop to Windows 7. While Windows 7 is a great 'step' in the right direction for MS, I can't help but feel like I'm now using a wannabe Mac. For instance, the dock has now been copied, but it's not as good as what is currently in OS X. It's not centered, it doesn't shrink and expand as more and less programs pop on it.

The system tray is now a point of confusion, since many older programs use the tray assuming the old-style windows taskbar. Tray launchers are now meaningless and just take up space. My biggest problem with Windows 7 is that the Windows bug of system tray icons not all showing up is *still* present. This bug has been present in Windows since NT4. Is it really that hard to show all system tray icons properly, MS? Do you know how annoying it is when my Pidgin tray icon is invisible?

XP support is dying, though. It's becoming more and more of a pain in the butt to get XP to install on newer hardware that tends to have only Vista drivers. Once Windows 7 has been out for 6 months, I expect XP support to cease completely from the industry. Microsoft will be eager to pull support from the product and force the XP userbase to upgrade.

Conclusion - If you need a PC, then stick with a PC and use Windows 7. Gamers really can't go over to Mac right now, as Mac OS X gaming is still a complete and utter joke. Somebody needs to tell Steve Jobs that people game on their PCs. I'm sure he doesn't care, though. He's too busy raking in a killing off the iPhone. Power users won't go over to the Mac because of the premium they'd pay for hardware. If you're a build-it-yourself kind of guy like me, then the idea of paying outrageous $$$ for a Mac wont fly.

If I was buying a computer for someone who did not game, and everything they did was handled by the Mac, I'd get them a Mac instead. The user interface of Mac OS X is still far ahead of Windows 7. You'll be paying the Mac premium for the computer, but a vast majority of the general population needs an easier-to-use computer over a more-powerful computer. Microsoft still has quite the fight on it's hands when it comes to the PC market. Windows 7 is going to slow down the bleeding, but I'd be lying if I said Windows 7 UI was better than Mac OS X UI. It's just plain not there yet. It's too many of the old Windows elements mixed with a wannabe Mac.

Jul. 17th, 2009 @ 04:23 pm We're *completely* out of the Allston apartment now
My friend James visited Boston during the 4th of July. I tried to drag him out to the typical touristy places, but he seemed content hanging out at the apartment. We had a good time overall, and it was a decent vacation for me as well.

---

The nightmare that is moving apartments is now over. The major accomplishment from all this work is being in a place that is more beneficial to me. The improvement to the quality of my life has been worth the massive effort it took to get here. With moving out of the way, my life can now cease to be about transitioning from one apartment to another. So what better time for a quick re-evaluation of my life.

The biggest eyesore on my current agenda is my progress towards certifications, or shall I say, utter lack of progress. I'm hoping that now that the move is over, I can devote my free time towards studying and hopefully have the 2nd test done before I head home to WV in October. I'd also like some time to play with the lab that I spent several thousand dollars building and have yet to use.

I have a full gym schedule again. I have a class every day of the week except for Saturday. Now that moving is over, I should be able to make each one of those classes. Hopefully the hour a day I devote to those will help me obtain my physical goals.

My work is tolerable. I'm kind of appreciative that it's been more quiet with people gone during the summer. It's still a low-paying job that leads nowhere, though. I still check the job sites daily, and I still need to keep busting my *** when it comes to getting those certs I need.

I think I need to eventually decide on what I want when it comes to a relationship. It's still fairly low on the priority list, though. I'll most likely just not take it seriously until I get my career going where I want it. I do enjoy being hit on as much as I'm currently being hit on, though. ( which is to say, fairly frequently. )

Maybe if I get myself the right job, I can start thinking about a condo / house for my next move. This new place will do until then. :)

July 11th is the *last* day to preorder your upgrade to Windows 7 at the 50% discounted price. Windows 7 is much more user friendly and far less resource-intensive than Windows Vista, so the upgrade is well worth the discounted price.

About this Entry
Jun. 23rd, 2009 @ 02:41 pm When will my life *stop* being about this apartment move?!?!
It's been over a month of pure Hell. Searching for apartments, landing the new apartment, moving our crap into the new apartment. The entire affair has been dominating my life. So imagine my delight when I find out that two of the roomies in the new place aren't getting along when it comes to room selection. Furthermore, one of them wants to leave the apartment before he's even moved in. I can see valid points to both sides of the argument. I don't see why it's so hard for people to work out such a small detail. Both rooms are nice rooms. Both of those rooms are better than any room we had back at the old apartment.

The fight spiraled out of control since it started. I really don't even want to go into the details. The point is that now one fo the roomies wants out, and that leaves me without someone in the place paying rent. This *extremely* ticks me off, because it would have been much easier to get a 4BR apartment in the first place. I busted my *** trying to fit everyone into this apartment. I don't care what room either of you take, but when you start threatening my monthly finances *after you sign*, that's when I start getting ticked. The other roomie who isn't moving out isn't exactly innocent, either.

I'm going to attempt to make amends with the one roomie who wants out. Unfortunately, if that doesn't work, that means I need to fill a bedroom in my apartment ASAP. Rent is $550 a month + eletric and cable. It's at Powder House Square in Somerville, MA. This couldn't have come at a worst time. Byron is still down in Kentucky, and that only leaves 3 of us to pay 5 BRs worth of rent for the month. Furthermore, all the expenses are under my name, so I'm the one who has to write the actual check. Compound that with the fact that I put down all of the money for the security, and it's easy to realize that my bank account is *not* happy with me at the moment. Oh, did I mention one of the roomies who is still here doesn't have a job yet? Yeah, the fun never ends...

Speaking of fun never ending, Harvard just announced layoffs. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs posts record bonuses this quarter. Corporate wealthfare FTL.

I had a meeting with a recruiter this week. It was for a Network Engineering job in Boston. Light travel was required, but all of it was done by subway, so I didn't mind that aspect. The recruiter told me I could get a 'significant increase from my current pay'. Which is good, and honestly expected. So you imagine my surprise when all he was proposing was a $7k max pay increase. Next time he calls me downtown, maybe he should go google average salaries for network engineers in the Boston area. I'm not a bargain to be had, no matter how much I want out of my current job.

---

Enough venting about the BS I have to put up with in my everyday life. Let's talk about the positives. I really like the new apartment. I've been sleeping really well, and waking up at a reasonable time. I think it might have something to do with this strange thing called 'sunlight' coming through my window in the morning. I've lived in a basement for 2 1/2 years, so I've forgotten what that can be like. The air is cleaner, and I don't have to dust everytime I open the window. The place isn't infested with rodents and insects. We have parking space, so when people visit, they can drive their car and park in the driveway. We have actual cabinet doors instead of open wooden shelves.

The place is fairly clean and well maintained, which is the complete opposite of where we came from. The 2 floors and separate bathrooms keep the tenants spaced out, and thus the apartment feels less crowded than it used to feel. The rent is dirt cheap for a 5BR apartment. The location is terrific. I get to work at least 10 minutes faster each morning. We're connected to the red line, which is the best subway line in Boston as far as I'm concerned. The Green Line B, which is the line we used to be connected to, used to take double the time to get to Park Street Station.

There are a few negatives. The dishwasher isn't very powerful, so all dishes need to be rinsed properly before put into the dishwasher. The kitchen itself is smaller, so everyone will need to be mindful of the limited counterspace. The house itself is slightly tilted to one side. It's noticable, but it doesn't really affect us as tenants. I'm sure the landlord can't be too happy about the situation, as I'm sure it'll continue to get worst over the years. The rooms could use more power outlets in them. The electrical wiring seems kind of dated. Lastly, I kind of wish there was a grocery store a bit closer to the house. It just means you have to restock items continually instead of getting them all in one massive grocery store trip. All of this is really nitpicking. The place is a major upgrade in almost every other way. I'm quite happy with the results. Now if I can just get everyone into the place and paying rent, I'd be set.

---

James will be visiting soon. I'm looking forward to that. I guess I'll go to MITAC and pick up the standard set of Aquarium and Duck Tour tickets. *sigh* I don't mind going on the Duck Tour, but the Aquarium can be painful to see after the 50 billionth time. Time to do all the same Boston touring crap I did with Byron just a month ago.

Jun. 21st, 2009 @ 10:43 pm Facebook drama
So like the rest of the planet, I have a Facebook. I try to keep as much of my personal life as private as possible on there. If I really cared about true privacy, I wouldn't be using the thing in the first place. To the point - back in WV, I lived a far less open life than I do now in Massachusetts. There are people in West Virginia I do not want on my Facebook because it reveals a bit too much about me as a person. Even just being able to see my friends list is a giant 'hint' about my sexuality. Then there is the entire 'tagged photos' thing, which can *really* share a bit too much information with the world.

The problem is, there are friends from West Virginia who I'd like to be able to see my Facebook. However, if I add them to my Facebook, they'll have the friends I'm trying to avoid on their friends page. Then, I'll get harassed by that friend because now it's obvious I have an active Facebook account and I'm just ignoring them.

Because of scheduling issues, it looks like we're going to have our old apartment for another month. This apartment will be unused, and thus make perfect crashing space for anyone who might want to visit the Boston area. So if you happen to be thinking about visiting Boston in the very near future, please give me a buzz and we'll work something out.
About this Entry
Jun. 10th, 2009 @ 02:52 pm We sign the lease tomorrrow
As documented in previous posts, I've been looking for a new apartment to live in. My current landlord wanted a new lease signed by June 1st. So during [info]guilwolfie's trip a couple of weeks ago, the topic of what we're doing for a new apartment came up several times. Guil himself decided that it's time for a change in his life, and that he'd like to move up to Boston with us if we have the room for him. Furthermore, [info]fearandloafing's friend Andrew has been looking for a new apartment to stay in. That makes a total of *5* people who'd like to be in the next apartment we find.

So my challenge was to find a 5BR apartment that we could all afford, and that didn't totally suck. This proved quite tricky, as many of my current roomies either have no job currently or make slightly more than minimum wage. I spent over a week looking at possible places for the apartment. $2750 was the absolute maximum I was willing to spend on a place. This would make our individual rent $550 before electric, cable, and heat. Another challenge was trying to find a place that would let us move in before September 1st. September 1st is the general apartment moving date in the Boston area. It's this way because that is when the college students tend to move in the area. The problem with a September 1st move is that since everyone is moving at the same time, it's both a major pain in the *** to do and it's also much more expensive to hire movers or rent a U-Haul.

I finally managed to find a good place near Davis Square. The landlord is currently doing a credit check on all of the tenants. I'm hoping that goes fairly well, as I'd like for us to be able to sign the lease tomorrow. The entire process has been extremely time-consuming. I've personally been the main force behind getting this entire situation worked out. Even after signing the lease, I'll have to spend more time just packing and moving my stuff to the new place. I'm happy that we're not going to be living in a sh*thole this winter, but the entire moving process was a pain in the rear.

I'd really love this apartment to be the last apartment I rent. I'm getting sick of paying money out to landlords without eventually owning anything in return. The main barrier is having enough income to be able to actually afford to buy. My current job still pays me squat, and I don't see that changing for the next 2-3 years due to the recession. MIT, and my department in particular, has gotten extremely cheap on their support staff lately. Given this situation, I can't help but notice Harvard is down the street hiring similar jobs for far more $$$. So I've been keeping a keen eye out on the job sites ( not just Harvard ) to try to find me a new job.

In regards to my current job, my department finally got our new Administrative Officer. She has an IT background, and she's already wanting to change the way me and my boss do everything in this department. She's also fairly strict and my job is going to become far more stressful I'm used to. My job has already spiraled out of control with regards to me doing far more than is given in my job description. I'm fairly certain that since she's new, it's as if my first 2 1/2 years of busting my *** off never happened.

So I'm not too hopeful on a promotion anymore, and even though I think she'll clean up the department as a whole, I don't think she'll have much concern for the Hell that the support staff have already been through. Most people are just going to have to work harder for the same amazingly-small paycheck. What else are we supposed to do? It's a recession. They could fire us and leave us jobless. HR won't have any problem finding qualified replacements. This is why I'm concerned that we aren't regulating the banks enough, because if we don't, we're going to go through this Hell all over again sometime in the future.

---

Years back when Woot first started up, it was one of my favorite bargain sites. The deals it used to post were insane by any standards, and I'd frequently stay up until 1am in order to see what crazy deal would hit the site next. Then, Woot went mainstream. Too many people found out about Woot. Now your Woot.com deals are not even that good. A quick search with any dealfinding search site will net you the same product at lower prices.

I couldn't help but think of Woot's former glory when I stumbled upon BuyWithMe. Currently the site is only Boston-centric, but these are the kind of deals I've been missing from Woot. I guess if you don't live in a metro, Buywithme is not going to be for you, as it tends to focus on local businesses around metro areas. If you live in Boston, you should check this site frequently for outstanding deals from local businesses.

Jun. 7th, 2009 @ 11:32 pm Starting to lose faith
I know it hasn't been long, but I'm starting to lose faith in 'Change we can believe in'. Where is the real reform to our financial system? Is it just bailouts and nothing else? Why isn't he talking single-payer health care? Why must the health care insurance industries be protected? Is he just saving the old system with tax payer dollars? I know he's pushing for a government-run insurance plans, but I'm just not sure that will be enough.

When I see real regulation return, I'll change my mind. Right now, it's all about bailing out the banks and maybe ( not really ) going back and regulating them later.

About this Entry
May. 17th, 2009 @ 05:10 pm Visiting Visitors
One thing that I find myself doing time and time again is having my friends visit Boston. It's not only a way for me to show them a fairly awesome city, but it's a way to make me use vacation time. Sure, touring the same spots is a little repetitive, but the day-long conversations and such usually make up for the repetition.

Last year I had [info]t_wolf visit during March for Anime Boston. I also had my parents visit Boston during the month of July. This year, I have three visits scheduled. For Anime Boston, I invited up [info]guilwolfie to visit Boston for a week. In July, I'm having my friend James visit. For reference, James is the friend I had in West Virginia years ago. Shortly after I moved to Boston, he moved to Germany. He'll be staying for 4-5 days. Lastly, my longtime friend Andy will be visiting Boston during August. It's taken me *forever* to convince him to come up and visit me here, so I'm forcing him to stay at least a week.

In October, I head back down to WV to attend my friend Colin's wedding. I'll also be arriving back down in West Virginia in time to see my sisters newborn baby that's due in late October. I guess since she's having a baby, that pretty much implies that I'll be flying back to her wedding sometime next year.

The guy who she's engaged to is inheriting a family-owned air conditioning installation business that's located in West Virginia. Since my sister has no real job skills of her own, I assume this means she'll be living a good portion of her life in West Virginia. That would drive me crazy, but this is her call, so whatever.

May. 7th, 2009 @ 02:53 pm FYI, things still suck
So this is what it's like to be in the economic sh*thouse.

I've had a fairly wasteful month in April. I didn't get a lot done. Weekdays I spent working tech support, and weekends I got into playing Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2. Since I got carried away with the gaming, I've decided to go cold turkey on gaming completely until I manage to get a new job. I just can't afford anymore wasted time at this point.

I still don't like my current job. If you care for details, just read previous posts. No need to go over that again.

The apartment situation is still a huge ordeal. Rent prices around the Boston area have been skyrocketing, and this has made my apartment search next to impossible. Neither of my roomies have jobs, and only one of them is getting unemployment while he's jobless. So I'm in no situation financially to move to a new apartment in the first place.

I have a bad feeling we're going to be forced into signing a 1-year contract with our current apartment, though. The reality company has been pressing us on it since the beginning of the year. Once that contract is signed, we're going to be forced to endure another winter without being able to control the heat.

I didn't get the Tufts job I applied for. I've applied for 10 or so more jobs since then. I even gave my resume to jobs by recruiting firms. I can't *stand* recruiting firms. I like to know who I'm going to work for beforehand. I'm starting to get a little desperate when it comes to finding a new job.

In lighter news, I'm putting together my networking lab finally. It's cost me $1k so far, and the final price will most likely be closer to $2k. It's not the kind of money I wanted to spend when I'm already under financial pressure, but I need the actual hardware to work on if I'm going to continue to move my career in that direction.
About this Entry
Apr. 17th, 2009 @ 02:35 pm I hate this stupid recession
My grasp on sanity is slipping. I just can't handle this dead-end, road-to-nowhere job much longer. Yet because of the recession, instead of being able to move on to a better paying job with outstanding references, I'm just SOL.

Our department has no Administrative Officer. Even when we did have one, hardly anything got done due to her health issues. In our department, nobody gets promoted without having been here for decades. I kept busting my butt off for the department, and all I got were $25 gift cards in return. Thanks a lot. I'll use the gift card to buy something to try to keep my mind off my rodent-infested apartment, which is the only apartment I can afford because Cambridge renting prices are insane.

I still don't have my own office. It's been 2 1/2 years and they never saw fit to give me my damned own office. I'm stuck in the middle of a room like an administrative assistant. I end up interrupting my work constantly to get up, answer the door, and explain to the students that I'm not an admin assistant and I can't help them.

My finances still suck. I'm looking for a new apartment, but apartment prices are sky high right now. I don't have the kind of money needed to buy, even though I'd love to do so. I can't stand my current apartment because they keep me up all night turning the heat on and off.

I'm going to study for my next exam this weekend. It's the only thing I can do to keep my sanity. I never heard back from Tufts on the job I was interested in. I'm sure they were bombarded by applicants once they posted it to Craigslist. Employers who are hiring are hiring for pay far under what most jobs normally net. Entry-level networking jobs are *insanely* hard to get. Nobody wants to hire one. Everybody wants experience. How am I supposed to get experience when everybody wants experience?!? *pulls hair*

So yeah. Things currently suck, and a lot of it is because of the stupid recession. I'd be on to bigger and better things by now in a good economic climate. Not now, though. =/

Mar. 31st, 2009 @ 10:59 pm April Fools is no longer of interest
Been there, done that. All that April Fools is now is a day where my news sites on the Internet are worthless. The jokes aren't funny anymore. I'm sure I must have written this same entry before in years past. Same ol' crap every year. I did this all back in the mid-90s. Wake me when the stupidity is over.
